UV resistance

UV resistance of roofing membranes: protection against solar radiation and material degradation

The UV resistance of a roofing membrane is a crucial factor for its durability and functionality. Roofing membranes are exposed to sunlight during both the construction phase and long-term use, which particularly affects the polymers they contain. Without proper protection, UV radiation can weaken the material structure, leading over time to a brittle, cracked, and less resilient surface.

To prevent this, modern roofing membranes are equipped with UV-resistant protective substances. These components slow down material degradation by reducing the impact of radiation. Nevertheless, the final roof covering should be installed promptly to avoid excessive exposure to UV rays.

How long can a roofing membrane be exposed to UV radiation without protection?

The impact of UV radiation on roofing membranes occurs in two ways:

  • Direct sunlight exposure during the installation phase, before the roof covering is applied.
  • Indirect UV radiation that enters the roof space through skylights, light domes, or gaps in the supporting structure.

To prevent long-term damage to the roofing membrane, the final roof covering should be installed within six weeks after installation. If this is not possible, a temporary protective covering should be considered to reduce direct sun exposure.

Important Notes for Maximizing the Durability of the Roofing Membrane

  • The less UV radiation, the longer the roofing membrane remains functional.
  • The final roofing should be installed no later than 6 weeks after the membrane has been laid.
  • Minimize indoor light exposure: Ensure that skylights and other openings are covered to prevent indirect UV damage.

By considering these factors, your roofing membrane remains durable and resistant to external influences, ensuring a long-lasting, high-quality roof structure.
